After holding the top spot at the box office for three straight weeks, ‘Gravity’ finally lost its hold on the number one spot. ‘Bad Grandpa’ took the title of being the number one movie at the box office away from ‘Gravity’ by bringing in $32 million. While ‘Gravity’ didn’t win the weekend, it still did fairly well with only a 32.4% drop in ticket sales and brought in $20.3 million.
‘Bad Grandpa’ was able to dethrone a giant in ‘Gravity’ but this isn’t the first time in a years time where after occupying the top spot at the box office for three weeks straight, a movie finally lost its strong hold.
At the end of 2012, ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ held the top spot at the box office three weeks straight on the weekends of December 14th – 16th, 21st – 23rd, and 28th – 30th. It is the most recent movie, aside from ‘Gravity’, to hold the top spot for three weeks straight. But what movie played the ‘Bad Grandpa’ role and knocked it off its throne?
That movie would be ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’. For the weekend of January 4th – 6th it grabbed the number one spot at the box office and brought in around $21.75 million. ‘Bad Grandpa’ proved to be a bigger force seeing how it brought in more money but either way both films each dethroned a three week champion.
