If Jordan Stars as Human Torch, Will Race Become A Problem?

Today a rumor got out that Michael B. Jordan (from GREAT movies like Fruitvale Station and Chronicle) is being looked at to potentially star in the Independence Day sequel.  While reading  the report over at Comingsoon.net, I was reminded that Jordan might also play the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four reboot. What makes that interesting piece of news even more interesting is that in the comic books, the Human Torch is never black but Jordan is.

I personally would love to see him playing that role come into fruition because I believe that he is a great actor and it would be cool to see him in that role. Other people might feel the same way but in other instances, in movies based off of literature of some kind, when an actor plays a character that is usually a different race in the literature it is a problem. I guess it really just depends on how the viewers think the actor fits into the role or just what the role is to the story when it comes to people airing out their complaints because when it came to Idris Elba being cast as Heimdaill (who is white in the comics) in ‘Thor,’ fan boys all over the net went nuts. But when Denzel Washington is cast as Bobby Tench in ‘2 Guns’ there weren’t to many complainers out there. Maybe the difference there is ‘Thor’ was a more anticipated movie, but I don’t know.

I would like to know your thoughts on Jordan possibly playing the Human Torch and what  you think the reason is for people to be particular when it comes about what castings to complain about when it deals with the race of a character.

  1. As I’ve yet to see fruitvale station, I have seen Jordan in the movie Chronicle. I felt he was a solid actor, although that was the first time I’ve heard of him. As for me, I’ve never been concerned with how true a movie remains to the origins. Sometimes Hollywood needs to expand and twist a story to make it a worthy cinematic experience as it is.

    1. I agree that they should throw some original twists in them. I definitely believe that after comic book movies have been already a few times like Batman, Superman, and Spiderman, the producers should come at it with a unique take.
